Experience and Education
a.The Coding Specialist III performs accurate and timely review, coding, and abstracting of UTSW accounts utilizing ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, and CPT-4 code sets as indicated and according to coding team procedures.
b.The Coding Specialist III performs coding activities in a manner that meets productivity and quality standards as established by the coding leadership.
c.The Coding Specialist III maintains a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, and coding guidelines through participation in continuing education programs.
d.The Coding Specialist III maintains a thorough understanding of the intricacies of the various patient types cared for at UTSW (inpatient, same day surgery, interventional procedures as examples) so work assignment adjustments can be made with little workflow disruption and coding coverage can be appropriately provided.
e.The Coding Specialist III may mentor the work of designated coding employees to ensure quality and quantity of work as Coding Specialists I and II grow in their knowledge and expertise.
2. General Functions
a. Assists in upholding coding team expectations, customer service standards, professionalism, operating procedures, processes, and other team strategies and goals.
b. Assist in promoting a culture of support, continuous learning, and team work.
c. Adheres to all UTSW and departmental policies and procedures to include the Remote Coding Agreement where applicable.
d. Performs other duties as assigned by coding leadership.
