Experience and Education


Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Health Care Administration, or related field.  Master degree preferred. Five (5) year's experience in first-line or mid-level mgmt. or supervision with min. of Three (3) years supervisory experience in Transfusion Services.
Certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), CLS (NCA) or equivalent as defined under the CLIA "88 regulations.   ASCP Blood Banking certification preferred. 

Job Duties


Demonstrate continuous performance improvement in targeted areas of responsibility in alignment with the overall annual Hospital performance improvement targets.     
Meets or exceeds financial goals and objectives of the department. Oversees the Transfusion Services Program for the CLS-wide system, covering all associated hospitals& clinics.  Accountable for the direct management of the Blood Bank laboratory section to provide high quality, accurate & timely test results in a cost-efficient manner.  
Responsible for hiring, developing, motivating, counseling, overseeing & training, including cross-training, & ensuring competency of Blood Bank employees in all shifts at all facilities; holding staff accountable for maintaining and enforcing high, fair & consistent standards of performance; prioritizing assignments & making staffing adjustments in accordance with budgetary guidelines; monitoring the section operating & capital budgets; maintaining the productivity goals of the section.
Maintain Blood Bank technical expertise to analyze current methods & systems and develop innovative ways to improve operations. Lead the validation of new Blood Bank test methods, process control & analytical proficiency.  Support development of new methods/protocols to improve laboratory efficiency, compliance & accreditation.  
Ensure the accuracy and integrity of the test information & laboratory data in the Laboratory Information System(s) (LIS) in coordination with Information Resources department.     
Oversees an effective Chemistry Quality Improvement program, in conformance with the Clinical Laboratory Services & UTSW University Hospitals (UH) Quality Programs; assists in the development & implementation of department goals & objectives; maintaining accreditations including, but not limited, with College of American Pathologists (CAP), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS, The Joint Commission (TJC), licensing for Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) for patient care.
Ensures laboratory is compliant with Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations & the Health Insurance Portabilit Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).     
Prepares and/or participates in the development of the department budget in conjunction with established goals & objectives. Ensures budgetary goals are met annually.  Responsible for promoting effective communication & teamwork with all laboratory & hospital staff among the UTSW University Hospitals. Serves as a resource & communication liaison by facilitating timely & accurate dissemination of information to the laboratory staff.
