The health and well-being of our faculty and staff are a top priority. UT Southwestern provides a competitive and comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement benefits, as well as many other programs and services for employees. The benefits are available to all benefit eligible, temporary and student employees.
All benefits-eligible employees begin participation in the Texas Teacher Retirement System (TRS) on their first day of employment. In TRS, the employee contributes 7.2% of their annual salary toward retirement, while UT Southwestern Medical Center contributes an additional 6.8% of the employee’s annual salary. Some employees may be eligible to opt out of TRS and participate in the Optional Retirement Program (ORP). Participation in a retirement program is mandatory for all benefits-eligible employees.In addition, all employees may participate in the UTSaver TSA 403(b) and/or the UTSaver DCP 457(b) retirement programs. HolidaysIn addition to paid holidays, employees also accrue two hours of floating holiday time each month.
VacationNew employees accrue eight hours per month of vacation time, which may be used after six months of employment.
Sick LeaveSick leave is accrued at a rate of eight hours per month. There is no waiting period for use of sick leave, and no maximum allowed accrual.
Workers’ Compensation Insurance
In the event of a work injury or contraction of an occupational disease, UT Southwestern employees are covered by Workers’ Compensation insurance –which covers medical expenses for reasonable and necessary care as prescribed by law, and in some cases income benefits for lost wages.
Previous State Service
Our employees are eligible to receive credit for prior State of Texas employment. If employed on a full-time basis, employees may qualify for higher vacation accruals and longevity pay, once previous state service has been confirmed.For full details, visit our Employee Group Insurance website.
