Clinical Nurse Specialist – BMT Program – Simmons Cancer Center

Job Summary

Specific tasks/duties include the following, but are not limited to:

• Plan strategies to overcome barriers and facilitate changes in oncology nursing practice, including the implementation of new programs, products and devices. Look at nursing practice in terms of safety, quality and disease management
• Enhance clinical knowledge of nursing teams
• Elevate level of I/P and O/P nursing role (currently task-oriented only)
• Initiate patient education programs that will improve outcomes
• Provide leadership, knowledge, skills and behavior-modeling that influences nursing practice. Influence development of evidence-based policies, procedures, and protocols, as well as best practice models and guidelines
• Implement interventions that improve oncology nursing care related to complex patient care problems that are consistent with system resources and evidence

Experience and Education

• Masters Degree in Nursing with CNS focus/accredited program.
• Five years experience in clinical nursing in related clinical area.
• Licensure as Registered Nurse by Board of Nurse Examiners for State of Texas
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications, and CNS certification required.
• Computer skills, basic equipment such as IV pumps, defibrillators, heart monitors, pulse oximeters.

• Collaboration Competency: Works jointly with other members of the health care team to optimize the clinical outcomes for patients. The CNS collaborates at an advanced level by committing to active engagement and constructive patient, family and system focused problem solving.
• Coaching Competency: Provides skillful guidance and teaching to advance the care of patients, families, groups of patients and the professional practice of nursing.
  Research Competency: Conducts through and systematic inquiry into clinical practice issues. This includes the search for, interpretation and use of evidence in clinical practice and quality improvement. Actively participates in the conduct of research.
• Ethical Decision Making, Moral Agency and Advocacy Competency: Identifies, articulates and takes action on ethical concerns at the patient, family, healthcare provider, organization and public policy level.
• Specific Knowledge, skills and abilities: Expert clinical judgment, clinical inquiry, advocacy, moral agency, collaboration, facilitation of learning, caring practices, system thinking, and response to diversity.
• Performs other duties as assigned
