The Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, in conjunction with the Department of Population & Data Sciences at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, is seeking multiple scientific investigators to join our dynamic research program in Population Science and Cancer Control. We are particularly interested in applicants with innovative, independent, and collaborative research programs in biomarker validation, obesity and metabolic syndrome, molecular/cancer epidemiology, and cancer care delivery across the cancer control continuum.
Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in behavioral or biological science, bioinformatics or biostatistics, communication, epidemiology, health services, psychology, or public health. The Cancer Center leadership will consider interested and qualified senior investigators for leadership positions. Appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience.
The Population Sciences and Cancer Control Program is one of six research programs in the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, which received NCI designation in 2010 and achieved Comprehensive status in 2015. The Program has 27 members from diverse disciplines (social and behavioral sciences, economics, epidemiology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, implementation science, outcomes/health services) and receives annual peer-reviewed funding of ~$6 million. The Program has established research portfolios in cancer care delivery research in safety-net healthcare settings and cancer screening, cancer survivorship, and dissemination and implementation research. Members are highly collaborative with several multi-investigator awards.
One-third of Program members have primary or secondary appointments in the Department of Population & Data Sciences, the multidisciplinary, research-intensive academic home for population scientists conducting innovative research in a range of diseases, including cancer. Thirty-one Department faculty maintain a robust research portfolio conducting large, population-based observational and interventional studies, many using the comprehensive electronic health record of our University and public safety-net health system partners. Our recruitment goal is to expand the positive impact of our research across the thirteen counties of our catchment area – the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) Metroplex. This North Texas region has over 7.5 million residents and four of the fastest growing counties in the US. DFW is a majority-minority population (43% White, 29% Hispanic, 17% Black, 7% Asian) with one of the highest uninsured rates (21% vs. 10%) in the country.
