Job Summary

The Animal Resource Center Senior Trainer will be working under general supervision to lead training and to design curriculum for ARC and research staff to ensure compliance of the animal program and animal welfare.

Experience and Education

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two (2) years with training in the animal care field/operations.
• Experience performing laboratory animal techniques preferred.
• Laboratory Animal Technologist (LAT) certification or higher preferred.
• Experience may be considered in lieu of education.

Job Duties

• Develops and designs curriculum and a variety of training materials, videos, online modules, handouts, and other training tools.

• Leads training with research staff (group and one-on-one training), including animal handling, animal husbandry, anesthesia, aseptic technique, animal health, and IACUC policies, and department standard operating procedures.
• Leads training with ARC staff regarding animal husbandry, safety, and a variety of other topics.
• Leads and/or assists new hire schedule and training in various animal facilities for cage wash equipment and operations, animal husbandry, and animal techniques.
• Leads large group training meetings, brown bag lunches, and other learning development opportunities for ARC staff.
• May assist the Training Specialist and Training Manager on trainings and other projects.
• Identifies and assesses basic training needs and conducts remedial training with ARC and research staff, including non-compliant research staff.
• Completes, organizes, and inputs training records and acknowledgements.
• Ensures all training, guidance, and curriculum is in compliance with ARC Standard Operational Procedures, IACUC Policies, the Guide, AWA, NIH Guidelines, USDA, CDC, and PHS Policy.
• Stays knowledgeable with regulatory laws and guidelines in the lab animal field.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Work requires experience with personal computers, presentation software, and desktop software packages.
• Works requires experience with animal techniques, including: anesthesia, aseptic technique, drug administration, collecting blood, recognition of normal and abnormal animal behavior, and appropriate handling of animals.
• Work requires good verbal and written communication skills.
• Work requires ability to deliver effective presentations and training seminars.
• Work requires ability to operate multimedia equipment.
• Work requires ability to maintain accurate written records.
• Work requires ability to read, write, speak, and conduct analysis.
• Work requires ability to conduct prolonged speaking, walking, and standing.
• Work requires carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed primarily in office area.
