Why join Green Center for Reproductive Biology Sciences?
A staff position is available in the laboratory of Gary Hon (www.honlab.org) in the Green Center for Reproductive Biology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. As part of NIH’s new IGVF Consortium to understand the Impact of Genomic Variation on Function, our lab has exciting projects related to understanding how genetic variants contribute to phenotypes in human development. This team science initiative by the National Human Genome Research Institute will define modern genomics for the coming decade.
Multiple positions are open for motivated candidates with strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Candidates should either have 1) Strong computational, statistical, or mathematical skills; experience analyze large-scale datasets; or 2) Strong experience in molecular biology, genome engineering, and/or genomics. We seek creative and energetic individuals with a keen interest in working on a large multidisciplinary team project at the forefront of modern genomics.
Experience & Education
- Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field of biological science, thesis work in bioinformatics and computational biology.
- Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field of biological science, and two (2) years related research experience in bioinformatics and computational biology.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field of biological science, and four (4) years related research experience in bioinformatics and computational biology.
Preferred Skills
- Develop and revise high performance next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis pipeline systems.
- Develop complex data integration methods/algorithms across various NGS sequencing techniques.
- Lead or participate in the brainstorming sessions to seek reliable solutions for complex data analysis related to specialized research methodologies
- Oversee the development and maintenance of complex databases to support new and ongoing research projects.
- Investigate/solve complex problems involving interesting and sometimes puzzling data.
- Manage hardware and software resources for multiple labs. Ensure systems meet the continuing needs of the labs.
- Prepare research reports for presentation sometimes to a broad range of non-computational staff and assist with preparation of manuscripts for publication.
Job Duties
- Perform professional work in support of scientific research using technical knowledge of software, software development, networking, and/or hardware in a complex computing environment. Subject matter expert in multiple areas of computing technology, and specific knowledge of molecular biology and genetics.
- Manage computer hardware and software programming and maintenance for one or more research laboratories. Ensure existing systems meet the continuing needs of the labs and/or recommend and test new systems as necessary.
- Perform or direct others to perform complex data analysis related to specialized research methodologies and results. Manage assigned research projects with minimal input from the Principal Investigator.
- Develop and/or modify software to support new and ongoing research projects.
- Resolve hardware, software, and network issues in support of the laboratory.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of complex databases to support new and ongoing research projects.
- Prepare research reports for presentation and assist with preparation of manuscripts for publication.
- May specialize in bioinformatics, software development, network administration, or hardware/software maintenance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
