Summary

Works under moderate supervision to provide veterinary medical and surgical services for research animals in accordance with federal laws and other organizational requirements.

Experience and Education

• DVM or VMD degree from Accredited Veterinarian Medical Association school, completion of two (2) to three (3) year postdoctoral training program in laboratory animal medicine, and three (3) to five (5) years related veterinary experience.
• Current license to practice veterinary medicine in the United States, and American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) diplomat preferred.

Job Duties

• Provides medical and surgical care for research animals.
• Coordinates health assessments of incoming non-commercial research animals.
• Assists in Institutional Animal Care and Research Advisory Committee protocol reviews.
• Represents Animal Resources Center Director concerning animal health issues in event of his/her absence.
• Communicates with research staff and faculty regarding animal health and welfare.
• Coordinates quarantine and health maintenance of animal colonies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Work requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Work requires animal medical, surgical, gross pathology, and diagnostic skills.
• Work requires ability to manipulate, update, and/or change computerized data.
• Work requires use of controlled substances on research animals.
• Work requires constant contact with research investigators and their staff to maintain animal health and welfare.
• Work requires occasional contact with physical plant personnel to maintain comfortable animal quarters.
• Work requires contact with Institutional Animal Care and Research Advisory Committee staff and non-commercial animal suppliers.
• Work requires occasional contact with United States Department of Agriculture, American Accredited Association for Laboratory Animal Care, and the National Institutes of Health to ensure fulfillment of animal welfare requirements. Work requires occasional contact with animal vendors to verify animal health.
• Work requires ability to provide input as needed on Animal Resources Center policies pertaining to animal health.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed primarily in animal laboratory area.
