Experience and Education
High School Diploma required, Associate's Degree preferred.
Bachelor's Degree strongly preferred.
Must be able to read, write, and speak English. Excellent computer skills, intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel and PowerPoint is essential. nn- Three (3) years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician required. Five (5) years of previous supervisory or management experience is preferred.
Working knowledge of AORN standards, OSHA guidelines, and in depth knowledge of TJC, IAHCSMM, and AAMI Standards is strongly preferred
Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician Certification (CSPDT) or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) required.
Must have extensive knowledge of aseptic technique, sterilization processes, regulatory agency guidelines, and technical knowledge of surgical instrumentation, sterilization equipment and supplies.
Broad based and extensive technical knowledge of OR case cart processing and extensive technical knowledge of computer tracking, surgical scheduling and instrument bar coding processing required.
Assists with personnel functions of interviewing, hiring, evaluating, terminating, staffing as well as guidance and counseling of central sterile processing staff to track attendance, disciplinary actions, and commendations. Assists with performance evaluation and goal setting for central sterile processing staff.
Performs routine daily supervisory rounds in central sterile processing area to ensure that area is clean and operating. Identifies problems and participates in time resolution process prior to seeking assistance from Clinical Manager.
Assists with development and implementation of departmental processing goals and quality management activities. Makes hospital rounds as appropriate.
Maintains current working knowledge regarding latest technology pertinent to central sterile processing supplies, equipment, and instrumentation per age specific concerns for children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Stays up-to-date on current legal and regulatory standards regarding central sterile processes. Makes hospital rounds as needed and may manage equipment, rentals and returns.
Supervises, assists, and performs all duties and functions required of central sterile processing technician. Assists and performs regular routine maintenance, recordkeeping, and inventory control on central sterile processing supplies, equipment and instruments. Assists in repair, loan and borrow process of surgical supplies, equipment and instruments. Conducts daily operation and long range goal planning for central sterile processing area.
Covers during staffing shortages and available during off-shifts for central sterile processing coverage as needed. Manages overtime and emergency staffing situations.
Identifies and evaluates all infrequently used supplies, equipment, and instruments for elimination from inventory. Ensures that supplies equipment, instruments are issued promptly and accurately. Ensures that special needs equipment and instruments delivered by vendor are logged, processed and available. Ensures that instrument sets are sorted correctly and labeled properly and accurately.
Determines daily supply needs of equipment and instruments and maintains proper inventory control. Organizes and prioritizes central sterile processing tasks based on identified need. Performs and ensures performance of central sterile processing duties in manner that is cost effective without compromising quality.
Maintains ongoing communication with manufacturers and materials management department and clinical manager of central sterile regarding inventory supplies, equipment, instruments, and vendor returns. Presents self in positive professional manner when communicating and exhibits positive attitude in support of hospital and management including decisions made by administration and/or management. Refrains from making negative comments.
Ensures compliance with Central Sterile departmental work attire and personal protective equipment. Ensures compliance with departmental work patterns regarding work flow, air flow, and people flow.
Ensures that processing supplies, equipment, and instruments are handled properly and ensures that fragile instruments and scopes are handled delicately. Ensures that functions and use of chemicals within departments are in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, OSHA, JCAHO and AORN Standards, and other governing agencies.
Supervises, directs, and coordinates duties and functions of central sterile processing staff. Serves as professional technical subject matter expert, resource person, and/or preceptor. Completes written performance evaluation form in timely manner. Identifies educational needs of central sterile processing staff and collaborates with Clinical Educator to assist with providing learning opportunities.
