The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is conducting a national search for a Chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences. Established in 2004 with the mission of promoting and facilitating clinical research across the institution. The Department includes programs in Behavioral and Communication Sciences, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Community Health Sciences, and Outcomes and Health Services Research. The Department’s 25 highly productive faculty members are focused primarily on research, but the Department also has a major commitment to educational programs, including an innovative Master’s curriculum in clinical investigation, which is offered in partnership with the institutional Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program.

Moving forward, UT Southwestern will expand the Department to be the academic home for development of robust research and training programs in clinical informatics. This expansion goes hand-in-hand with an ongoing reorganization of the campus’ clinical and basic information technology (IT) programs, the launch of a Department of Bioinformatics, the establishment of a large-scale population health initiative with our partner Texas Health Resources, and the evolving goals of the Center for Translational Medicine (home of the UT Southwestern CTSA). Accordingly, the new Chair will be expected to develop programs in clinical informatics and related fields that are crucial to these institutional initiatives. Close working relationships with colleagues in the Department of Bioinformatics, the Center for Translational Medicine, and the IT Programs of UT Southwestern and its affiliated organizations and hospitals will be essential to develop a comprehensive multi-institution approach to these initiatives.

The incoming Chair will be presented with a unique set of opportunities. UT Southwestern is a premier research institution with an exemplary record of accomplishment in biomedical science, exemplified in its five active Nobel Laureates, 22 members of the National Academy of Sciences, and more than $400 million in research expenditures. There are more than three million patient visits per year at the University Hospitals, Parkland Health and Hospital System, Children’s Health System of Texas, and a growing network of outpatient primary and specialty care clinics. The entire health system relies on an extensive electronic medical record platform and enterprise data warehouse, which provide rich opportunities for data mining across multiple clinical venues.

The ideal candidate is expected to have a doctoral degree in an appropriate field and a distinguished career in Biomedical Research. Those wishing to be considered should include a brief statement of their interest and qualifications for the position and a copy of their curricula vitae. Please forward applications or recommendations for this position to:
