Join UT Southwestern as a Registered Nurse (RN) for our Medical/Surgical care unit and help with our commitment to enhance patient care and comfort. UT Southwestern focuses on a Relationship-Based Care nursing method that allows for a stronger connection between patients and our caregivers. Acute Surgical/Solid Organ Transplant Unit – 32 beds.  7 Green unit provides exceptional nursing care with the focus on patient and family education for acute surgical patient population recovering from surgery.  Currently, we care for patients post kidney and liver transplants, bariatric surgeries, vascular surgeries, and other general surgeries.  The special needs of the families and caregivers of the surgical patients are served through a coordinated, interdisciplinary approach. 

Nurse: Patient Ratio

1:3 to 1:5

Days/Nights

PCT: Patient Ratio based on patient care needs

1:8-12 Days

1:8-12 Nights

Staff Mix:

Our staff includes ANMs, RNs, PCTs and HUCs.  We also have a Unit Based Educator, who helps with any educational needs.

Accomplishments/Awards:

– Our unit is one of the first few Transplant units in the nation to care for post kidney transplant directly after surgery, bypassing the need to go to ICU. 

– Ready, Set, Go: Mobility Project – Patient ambulation and progressive mobility is an important part of 7Green’s culture. 

– 7Green won the first ever Team Excellence Award (2019)

Experience and Education

·       Graduate of an accredited Nursing program either by a governmental authority nursing board, or by a licensing authority that has jurisdiction over approval/accreditation of nursing programs (Texas BON 217.1) 

·       One (1) year of RN experience. 

Required Licenses or Certifications 

·       Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) license 

·       Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification 

·       BSN preferred 

·       Specialty areas may have increased experience/certification requirements 

Job Duties

·       Perform and accurately document physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments. All assessments take into consideration age specific criteria (children, adolescents, adults and older adults) 

·       Actively anticipate patient’s and/or patient’s family needs and expectations and utilize these in conjunction with their assessment to develop an appropriate plan of care. Utilize critical thinking skills in planning and prioritizing nursing care. Maintain and utilize competencies per unit expectation. 

·       Identify and implement appropriate nursing interventions based on the completed assessment. Complete accurate and timely documentation of interventions. Active coordinator of the interdisciplinary plan of care. Confer with all members of the health care team in a collaborative fashion. Share information and observations of patient and/or patient’s family in a manner that advocates for optimal patient care. 

·       Appropriately prioritize nursing interventions based upon completed assessment. Promptly identify changes in condition as evidenced by nursing assessment, labs, x-rays, etc. Report changes and take follow-up action as appropriate. Actively involve patient in plan of care and keep patient, family and/or care-giver informed. 

·       Evaluate implemented interventions and modify care according to the evaluation. Document interventions and modifications to the plan of care. 

·       Adhere to appropriate hospital and/or Department of Nursing policies, procedures, clinical pathways and nationally accepted standards of nursing practice. Incorporate ANA standards, professional practice model (Shared governance) and care delivery model (Relationship Based Care) into the provision of safe, quality patient care. Nursing care is based on current literature and research.  

·       Provide appropriate and timely answers and/or education to patients, patient’s families, significant others and/or caregivers. Complete accurate and timely documentation of all education provided including discharge plan of care. Assess competence, obtain feedback/evaluation of understanding from patient, family, significant other and/or /caregivers. Demonstrate effective communication based on individual patient needs and learning preferences. 

·       Welcome and orient patient, family, significant other and/or caregiver to the unit. Encourage patient/family participation in care. Review personalized patient plan of care with patient/family every shift. Update white boards accordingly and set daily goals with patient input. Explain special diets, tests, procedures and medications in easily understood and appropriate language. Make hourly rounds on patients and communicate when they will return. 

·       Advocate for resources and support that enhance patient safety and unit/hospital-based initiatives. Participates in evaluating data to guide decisions regarding unit/department budge formulation and implementation. 

·       Performs Peer Evaluation to provide constructive feedback to peers regarding performance. Holds co-workers accountable for their behavior and compliance with policies and standards. Actively intervenes with patient safety is at risk. 

·       Accountable for patient care and quality/safety initiatives (EX: patient safety, patient satisfaction, core measures, infection control, etc.) 

·       Share professional and technical information with colleagues and students. Offer self as a resource as needed to others (EX: preceptor, charge, mentor, unit expert, lends a hand when needed, etc.) 

Schedule Details 

Medical/Surgical RN’s at UT Southwestern are scheduled 12-hour day shifts (7:00 AM to 7:00 PM) or 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM) and every other weekend at Clements University Hospital on UTSW’s Dallas campus. On-call availability and some weekends are a requirement.
