Education and Instruction Librarian

The University of Texas Southwestern Health Sciences Digital Library and Learning Center seeks to hire an Education and Instruction Librarian to provide and grow our library services by developing innovative information literacy, software/hardware, artificial intelligence training program and provides education services primarily to serve the faculty, staff, and students at the School of Health Professions, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. This librarian will also work as an information expert alongside faculty, staff, fellows, residents, and students in the School of Public Health, School of Medicine, School of Health Professions, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and/or the University of Texas Southwestern Health System. 

The successful applicant will be able to take advantage of a highly flexible work environment, build partnerships with user communities primarily engaged in research and clinical activities, and develop new services and curricula. This individual will join the library’s Research and Education Librarian team to engage with UT Southwestern’s academic community. The team is currently embedded in medical, allied health, graduate school, public health, and graduate medical education. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Services & Technology. 

Specific duties & responsibilities:

• Perform customized education sessions on how to use scientific and medical databases and other authoritative resources to address clients’ education, research, and patient care informational needs.
• Lead, coordinate, and provide on-campus and online educational services for the School of Health Professions, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Office of Postdoctoral Affairs
• Answer reference questions virtually and take one weekly in-office reference shift
• Enhance, develop, and update library guides regularly (LibGuides) and review annually, especially in areas of specialty.
• Provides individual/group training sessions on Library products and services, virtually and in-person.
• Presents Library orientations
• Creates online tutorials
• Expands training topics into areas such as artificial intelligence and bibliometrics
• Knowledge of assessment and evaluation methods for Library instruction
• Serve on Library and departmental committees and/or task forces as appropriate.
• Other duties as assigned.

Departmental Expectations:

• Participates in regular meetings of the unit and the library as appropriate.
• Promotes education, outreach, and other library services.
• Shares the routine workload of the unit (e.g., education and outreach services, research requests) as directed by the Assistant Director of Library Services & Technology.
• Participates in library, campus, local, regional, state, national groups, and committees as needed.
• Expands knowledge and skill base with professional development, continuing education, and networking opportunities.
• Participates in campus and community outreach opportunities, promoting library and relevant medical and scientific resources to community groups.
• Educates and utilizes EndNote and other bibliographic resources for retrieving citations/articles.
• Fosters opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to share their experiences and expertise and celebrate successes as they engage each other to improve teaching and learning. 
• Maintains a positive, helpful, constructive attitude and work relationship with faculty, staff, students, and the community.

Minimum Qualifications:

• MLS or equivalent from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited institution is needed to be appointed as a non-tenured Faculty-Associate. 
• Advanced database teaching and searching skills.
• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
• Commitment to lifelong learning and continuous professional development.
• Ability to work effectively within a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
• Strong competency with newer technology tools.
• Strong customer service orientation.
• Ability to work creatively within a rapidly changing environment.

Preferred Software Proficiencies

• Working knowledge of PubMed and or other biomedical databases
• Microsoft Suite
• Screen capturing software (e.g., Camtasia)
• EndNote or other citation management software
• Creativity in approaches to active adult learner engagement and ability to deliver instruction in an online environment using video meeting software (e.g., Zoom, MS Teams)
• Experience creating instructional and outreach materials utilizing Springshare Products (e.g., LibGuides, LibCal, LibWizard, LibConnect) and Learning Management Systems (e.g., D2L, Moodle, Blackboard)

Preferred Experience

• One to three years of academic or health sciences library experience preferred
• One year of health sciences related experience preferred
• Biological sciences experience

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Strong leadership, presentation, and supervisory skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Knowledge of and experience with library management and discovery systems
• Knowledge of current practices and trends in the use and integration of emerging technologies to deliver information resources, services, and instruction in an academic library.
• Excellent ability to use personal computers, including Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to operate standard office equipment.

Desired Qualifications:

• Educational and research experience.
• Library and particularly health sciences library professional experience.
• Background in relevant disciplines (e.g., biomedical, public health).
• Spanish verbal and reading skills.
