Research Librarian

The University of Texas Southwestern Health Sciences Digital Library and Learning Center seeks to hire a Research Librarian to provide and grow our library services by developing innovative information literacy, research services primarily to serve the faculty, staff, and students at UT Southwestern. This librarian will also work as an information expert alongside faculty, staff, fellows, residents, and students in the School of Health Professions, School of Medicine, School of Public Health, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and/or the University of Texas Southwestern Health System. 

The successful applicant will be able to take advantage of a highly flexible work environment, build partnerships with user communities primarily engaged in research and clinical activities, and develop new services and curricula. This individual will join the library’s Research and Education Librarian team to engage with UT Southwestern’s academic community. This position is supported by the Research Services Coordinator and reports to the Assistant Director of Library Services & Technology.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

• Responsible for mediated biomedical searches
• Responsible for evidence synthesis/complex searches such as systematic reviews, consensus statements, scoping reviews, etc…
• Provide consultations related to complex biomedical searches
• Answer reference questions virtually and weekly in-office reference shift
• Enhance, develop, and update handouts and library guides regularly (LibGuides) and review annually, especially in areas  of responsibility.
• Provides individual/group training sessions on Library products and services, virtually and in-person.
• Promotes and educates on the Research Cycle
• Presents Library orientations
• Creates subject guides, tutorials, digital learning objects as needed
• Familiarity and interest in emerging technologies such as data management and data management plans, scholarly publishing, bibliometrics, AI assisted research and their potential impact on Library services
• Serve on Library and departmental committees and/or task forces as appropriate.
• Other duties as assigned.

Departmental Expectations:

• Participates in regular meetings of the unit and the Library as appropriate.
• Promotes education, outreach, and other library services.
• Shares the routine workload of the unit (e.g., education and outreach services, research requests) as directed by the Assistant Director of Library Services & Technology.
• Participates in library, campus, local, regional, state, national groups, and committees as needed.
• Expands knowledge and skill base with professional development, continuing education, and networking opportunities.
• Participates in campus and community outreach opportunities, promoting library and relevant medical and scientific resources to community groups.
• Educates and utilizes EndNote and other bibliographic resources for retrieving citations/articles.
• Fosters opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to share their experiences and expertise and celebrate successes as they engage each other to improve teaching and learning.
• Maintains a positive, helpful, constructive attitude and work relationship with faculty, staff, students, and the community.

Minimum Qualifications:

• MLS or equivalent from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited institution is needed to be appointed as a non-tenured Faculty-Associate.
• Advanced database searching skills.
• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
• Commitment to lifelong learning and continuous professional development.
• Ability to work effectively within a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
• Strong competency with newer technology tools.
• Strong customer service orientation.
• Ability to work creatively within a rapidly changing environment.

Preferred Software Proficiencies

• Working knowledge of PubMed and or other biomedical databases
• Microsoft Office Suite
• EndNote or other citation management software
• Experience and interest in research metrics/bibliometrics/publication metrics resources and educational content.
• Demonstrated interest in using emerging technologies and software to create solutions that address the evolving information needs of a research enterprise.
• Knowledgeable about the Research Cycle
• Deliver assistance and instruction in an online environment using MS Teams, Zoom, or other tools.
• The ability to thrive in a new environment and work with diverse people and topics.
• Experience creating instructional and outreach materials utilizing Springshare Products (e.g., LibGuides, LibCal, LibWizard, LibConnect)

Preferred Experience

• One to three years of academic or health sciences library experience preferred
• One year of health sciences related experience preferred
• Knowledge Skills and Abilities
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Knowledge of and experience with library management and discovery systems
• Knowledge of current practices and trends in the use and integration of emerging technologies to deliver information resources, services, and instruction in an academic library.
• Demonstrated competencies with both Mac and PC devices.
• Ability to operate standard office equipment.
