The Department of Neurology at UT Southwestern Medical Center is a nationally recognized leader in the comprehensive management of neurological conditions. Our vibrant department comprises more than 75 full-time faculty in 12 subspecialty sections, supporting a spectrum of complex and innovative approaches to neurological care, a broad range of novel research programs, and a panoply of educational opportunities for trainees. The department offers access to the latest innovative treatments in one of the most rapidly advancing fields of medicine and features an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center and a Level-4 NEAC Epilepsy Center. Through collaborations with the O’Donnell Brain Institute, the department is building state-of-the art facilities for drug and device testing and bringing current and new faculty together for collaborative research on brain disease therapy.
Napierala Lab in The Department of Neurology is seeking a full-time Senior Research Associate/Laboratory Manager to manage day-to-day operations of the laboratory. The Napierala lab utilizes both cell culture and mouse models to study mechanisms and test therapeutic approaches for Friedreich’s ataxia, thus knowledge in mouse colony maintenance and cell culture is required for this position. Internal candidates with a knowledge of UT Southwestern systems are preferred.
· Maintain our mouse colony (with the help of a technician) and IACUC protocols.
· Maintain laboratory safety certifications and compliance.
· Help with mouse dissections and deliveries of therapeutic modalities via injections.
· Facilitate and oversee laboratory supply orders (order entry is a responsibility of departmental administration)
· Oversee laboratory supplies to assure work continuity.
· Maintain laboratory equipment.
· Interact with Principal Investigator and laboratory members to ensure proper laboratory operations.
· Ph.D. degree with major coursework in field of assignment and no experience required. or
· Master’s degree with major coursework in field of assignment and five (5) years laboratory experience, including at least two (2) years at level of Research Associate or equivalent. or
· Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in field of assignment and six (6) years laboratory experience, including at least two (2) years at level of Research Associate or equivalent.
· Organizes laboratory to which assigned; determines work assignments of subordinates, advising them as to techniques, procedures, and equipment to be utilized in solution of work problems; reviews completed work for professional quality and attainment of desired results.
· Compiles and evaluates research data and develops new or revised techniques and procedures based upon such data.
· Performs or supervises design, development, or adaptation of equipment or apparatus used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.
· Compiles and analyzes results of research assignments and submits to principal investigator.
· Instructs medical students, graduate students, residents, and other laboratory personnel of lower grade with respect to techniques, procedures, and equipment utilized in research or experiments.
· Confers with industrial, governmental, or other professional groups with respect to progress or results of research assignment.
· Assists principal investigator and other professional personnel in preparation of reports and papers for publication, usually exercising responsibility for writing of particular segment or phase of report or paper.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
