JOB SUMMARY
Works under minimal supervision to provide responsible technical assistance in performance of assignments requiring basic knowledge of techniques and practices related to particular field of science.
A full-time technical staff position with full benefits is immediately available in the cutting-edge Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility (CEMF) at the University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center in Dallas. We seek a technically inclined candidate who is comfortable learning to work with high-end instruments. Specific duties will include Thinning (Milling) /processing cryo-samples in a cryo-Focused Ion Beam (cryo-FIB) as a core service to achieve the highest possible quality lamella; coordinate with users/customers and the CEMF director and manager regarding FIB projects undertaken at the core; and interfacing and collaborating with the UTSW Structural Biology Lab (SBL) which offers preliminary screening, data collection, and reconstruction of cryoEM/ET samples.

Here’s an example: We’ve found that small artificial molecules called peptoids show promise as both diagnostic tools and treatments for various types of cancer. Peptoids can bind to cancerous cells more tightly than normal cells. So our researchers are looking at ways to combine peptoids with anti-cancer drugs to target cancer cells more specifically.
