General Job Responsibilities:
Independently and proficiently performs basic and advanced ultrasonographic evaluation of the eye and orbit, including diagnostic A-scan, diagnostic B-scan, A-scan biometry, high frequency anterior segment ultrasound (i.e., ultrasound biomicroscopy or UBM), color doppler ultrasound, 3D ophthalmic ultrasound.
Evaluates and diagnoses ocular and orbital pathologies, including opaque media, dislocated crystalline lens or lens implant, trauma, extraocular muscles, optic nerve disease, anterior segment disease, glaucoma implant flow functionality, uveitis and ocular inflammation, eye measurements, ocular and orbital tumors, retinal and choroidal detachments, and vitreous opacities.
Effectively communicates findings and measurements in the electronic medical record using standardized reporting mechanisms.
Works with physicians to assure effective communication of findings and accuracy of reports, providing preliminary verbal reports as needed.
Performs ad-hoc tasks in support of the clinic as needed. Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition and ensure that it is properly supplied.
Maintains equipment and accessories in proper working order, perform quality control, and notify appropriate personnel for repairs or other issues.
Responds to inquiries, calls and requests regarding ultrasound exams in a timely manner.
Promptly communicates problems with equipment with appropriate staff.
Attends and participates in appropriate departmental and clinic meetings and classes.
Completes required courses/modules on time.
Performs pertinent duties in the best interest of patients, personnel, and the facility.
Adheres to departmental time, attendance, and tardiness guidelines.
Wears employee ID and follow dress code policy. May assume supervisory responsibilities as needed.
Participates in all regulatory compliance activities.
Patient Interaction:
Communicates with patients clearly and in a professional manner.
Ensures proper patient preparation, verifies screening protocols, and answers questions.
Evaluates patient’s history and symptoms for the procedure’s clinical criteria.
Ensures patient’s physical well-being while transporting to and from exam room and positioning for exam.
Communicates with patient and/or patient’s family (as appropriate) regarding the tests to be performed and assesses the patient’s ability to tolerate exam.
Demonstrates and maintains knowledge through continued education and skills development as appropriate.
Exam Performance
Verifies the requisition/order, ordering comments, physician’s notes, precautions, and patient consent forms.
Performs high quality ultrasound examinations according to exam protocol in a timely manner.
Ensures that images and records are properly completed with patient identification data and appropriate labeling, and that images are properly uploaded to electronic medical record.
Understands and competently operates and maintains all ultrasound machines and probes.
Maintains sanitation of equipment and examination setting.
Maintains OSHA and Infectious Waste Procedures compliance per protocol.
Maintains HIPPA compliance for all patient information.
Adheres to University Clinic/Hospital and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard the University assets.
