JOB SUMMARY
Works under broad direction to plan, organize, direct, and participate in work of major research project in field of specialization for which incumbent is particularly qualified by virtue of extensive training and experience.

This candidate will be working to build a large Gene Therapy program at UT Southwestern with the ability to rapidly translate promising therapies into clinical trials. This position will support these projects aimed at developing treatments for genetic pediatric diseases with a high unmet need. It will involve independent research but also support multiple ongoing projects in the laboratory. This requires the maintenance of various transgenic mouse lines. This position will involve mouse colony maintenance, including genotyping. Candidate will also assist or independently run a variety of molecular biology and/or cell-based assays, conduct molecular plasmid cloning and production, and produce AAV vectors. Prior experience with animal handling and injection (mice) strongly preferred. Experience with molecular biology assays strongly preferred. Experience in gene therapy research or cell culture will be an asset.

JOB DUTIES

• Plans, organizes, coordinates, directs, and personally participates in major medical or scientific research project, including development and implementation of research protocols. Selects key research personnel; determines specific goals or objectives to be attained; assigns and reviews work of subordinates.
• Reviews and analyzes resulting research data; revises techniques or approaches to work problems as indicated necessary by research data. Compiles, writes, and submits project results to principal investigator or department chairman.
• Prepares or assists in preparation of research papers, reports, and abstracts for publication as one of co-authors.
• Designs, develops, or adapts equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.
• Plans and supervises training of technicians and other laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures.
• Confers with industrial, governmental, or other groups concerning progress or results of research project.
• Supervises large group of employees engaged in performance of technical and professional work, which varies from routine to complex laboratory work tasks.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
