JOB SUMMARY
Works under general direction to perform professional level medical or scientific research assignments related to particular or specialized field of endeavor.

Robert Tower is a recently recruited Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at UTSW. The Tower lab integrates multi-omics based approaches in the fields of musculoskeletal development, homeostasis, repair and regeneration. The lab uses transgenic animal models, combined with bioinformatic approaches, to understand the mesenchymal-immune cell interactions which occur within the stem cell niche under physiological conditions, and strives to understand how these signaling cascades drive regenerative or fibrotic outcomes following injury. Understanding these divergent signaling mechanisms will hopefully help guide future therapeutic strategies to promote faithful repair of damaged tissue.

Job Duties:

• Support ongoing bench and animal work within the lab related to musculoskeletal repair, regeneration and fibrosis. 
• Routine molecular bench work combined with use of animal models (animal handling, injections, surgeries, sample collection) as well as downstream processing (histology, flow cytometry, cell culture) under supervision of the PI. 
• Constructs, assembles, and operates laboratory equipment and apparatus. 
• Records and evaluates data obtained from work assignments for use in scientific papers. 
• Collaborates with supervisor or other research personnel in preparation for scientific papers for publication. 
• Plans for, and provide working supervision to, work of Research Technicians or other laboratory personnel of lower grade.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required

• Education
  Master’s Degree with major coursework in field of assignment or
  Bachelor’s Degree with major coursework in field of assignment

• Experience
  3 years of laboratory experience with Master’s degree including
  2 years at level of Research Assistant II or equivalent or
  4 years of laboratory experience with Bachelor’s degree including
  2 years at level of Research Assistant II or equivalent.

JOB DUTIES

• Recommends and/or initiates new or modified procedures and techniques based upon latest developments in assigned field or analysis of research data.
• Performs computer programming for accumulation and analysis of research data.
• Designs, constructs, repairs, or modifies electronic and/or mechanical equipment or apparatus used in experiments and research projects.
• Instructs medical students, graduate students, residents, or other laboratory personnel of lower grade with respect to techniques, procedures, and equipment utilized in research or experiments.
• Assists principal investigator and other professional personnel in writing of reports and papers for publication.
• May provide working supervision to employees of lower grade engaged in performance of variety of difficult and complex laboratory work tasks.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
