Job Summary
The inpatient Float Pool consists of highly-skilled Registered Nurses (RNs) and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) capable of delivering quality care to patients and families across various clinical settings. The Float RNs are adept at bolstering the staffing requirements of both William P. Clements and Zale Lipshy University Hospitals. They bring a wide-ranging understanding of inpatient workflows, along with extensive knowledge and diverse skill sets, enabling them to support all inpatient departments. This level of highly-skilled and specialized care is vital to UT Southwestern’s commitment to excellence in patient care, education, and research.
As a float pool, our mission is to collaborate with inpatient units to develop supportive staffing solutions that address the needs of our University Hospitals and patients, ensuring continuous care in a secure environment.
Job Duties
- Performs and accurately documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments. Takes all assessments into consideration age specific criteria.
- Anticipates patient’s and/or patient’s family needs and expectations and utilizes these in conjunction with assessment to develop appropriate plan of care for patient. Utilizes critical thinking skills in planning and prioritizing nursing care. Maintains and utilizes competencies per unit expectation.
- Identifies and implements appropriate nursing interventions based on completed assessment. Completes documentation of interventions. Coordinates interdisciplinary plan of care. Confers with all members of health care team in collaborative, fashion, sharing information and observations of patient and/or patient’s family in manner that contributes to optimal patient care.
- Prioritizes nursing interventions based upon completed assessment. Identifies changes in condition as evidenced by nursing assessment, labs, x-rays, etc. Reports changes and takes follow-up action.
- Evaluates implemented interventions and modifies care according to evaluation. Documents interventions and modifications to plan of care.
- Adheres to hospital and/or Department of Nursing policies, procedures, clinical pathways and nationally accepted standards of nursing practice while delivering nursing care to patients. Suggests practices to enhance nursing care based on current literature and research.
- Provides answers and/or education to patient and/or patient’s family. Completes documentation of all education provided. Obtains feedback and evaluation of understanding from patient and/or family. Demonstrates effective communication with children. Con- tributes to patient and/or family verbal comfort with after dis- charge care.
- Welcomes and orients patient and/or family to unit. Encourages patient and family participation in care. Reviews plan of care with patient and family every shift. Explains special diets, tests, procedures and medications in easily understood language. Makes frequent rounds on patients, and communicates when will return.
- Assumes accountability for all actions in workplace. Reports errors promptly and takes appropriate follow-up action to rectify error. Provides supervision of and direction to unlicensed support personnel and nurses new to environment. Delegates duties appropriately and within legal parameters.
- Serves as advocate to patient and/or family. Responds to patient’s and or patient’s family’s complaints. Reports complaints to Clinical Nurse Manager or their designee. Utilizes chain of command to resolve patient, operational, or personal work related problems.
- Participates in performance improvement activities as directed. Attends at least 80% of scheduled staff meetings and 100% of mandatory educational sessions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required

Graduate of an approved/accredited nursing program either by a governmental authority, nursing board, or by a licensing authority that has jurisdiction over approval/accreditation of nursing programs (Texas BON 217.1).
Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.

1 year of acute med/surg nursing experience
- Licenses and Certifications
(BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT certification, accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required. Upon Hire and
(ACLS) ADV CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT certification, accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required. Upon Hire and
(RN) REGISTERED NURSE Current Texas RN license, Upon Hire or
(NLC) NURSING LICENSURE COMPACT-BNE Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) RN license, Upon Hire
(NIHSS) Natl Inst Health Stroke Scale Certification Upon Hire
(CPI) CRISIS PREVENTION INSTITUT CER within 180 Days

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Work requires use of considerable judgment in application of procedures, nursing assessment techniques, practices and policies to work problems, organization, and administration of hospital activities.
- Work requires ability to maintain current customer service, nursing, and technical skills by attending training programs and seminars to continue level of competency and ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
- Work requires ability to complete most assignments with substantial independence.
- Work requires good verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to read, write and communicate in English
- Work requires ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations.
- Work requires frequent contact with physicians, residents, fellows, allied health personnel, and other medical and/or non-medical office support personnel to coordinate necessary information to provide optimal level of patient care.
- Work requires telephone contact with patients, referring physicians, and pharmaceutical representatives outside of UT Southwestern, vendors, and third party payees.
- Work requires constant walking, standing, bending, turning, and stooping. Pushing and pulling heavy objects such as patient beds. Must be able to help lift and turn patients.
- Work requires ability to lift, push, and/or pull up to 50 lbs.
- Work requires proficiency in the use of computer technology.
- Pass pre-employment physical exam including colorblind testing.
