JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Managing Attorney for General Legal Services in the Office of Legal Affairs, this attorney works under limited supervision to provide legal counsel and resolve employment law disputes and other general legal issues (excluding medical risk management and healthcare regulatory matters) arising within an academic medical center.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

JOB DUTIES
- Serves primarily as an employment attorney responsible for effectively managing and favorably resolving a large docket of claims, investigations and lawsuits involving the University and its staff.
- Manages employment claims and lawsuits, including pre-litigation investigation, document preservation and discovery practice, preparing for and attending depositions, motions practice, hearing preparation, mediation, trial preparation, and appeals; assists the Office of General Counsel at UT System, the Texas Office of the Attorney General, and other outside counsel as applicable in every aspect of litigation management; assists with the University’s response to complaints, charges, audits or investigations from external state and federal agencies.
- Conducts research and provides advice and counsel regarding workforce management and compliance with applicable state and federal laws; oversees and coordinates outside counsel support on workforce management issues, as applicable.
- Works closely with the Office of Human Resources and advises institutional stakeholders and senior leadership on a variety of employment issues, including internal complaints and investigations, disciplinary actions, grievances and appeals, and compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations and institutional policies.
- Provides guidance and legal expertise to institutional stakeholders, senior leadership, and other attorneys regarding employment law issues that may arise in connection with institutional project initiatives.
- Performs all functions of a legal professional employed as in-house counsel as directed by Legal Affairs leadership, including communications with internal clients and preparation of legal opinions, memoranda, documents, reports, presentations, and negotiation of agreements.
- Assists with responses to subpoenas in federal and state court civil and criminal matters and subpoenas served by regulatory agencies.
- Advises on new and existing employment policy initiatives; drafts, reviews and revises institutional and departmental employment policies and procedures; develops and provides training on employment law and policy and other general legal issues, as assigned.
- Reviews, analyzes and advises the University administration, individual schools, and basic sciences and clinical departments concerning general legal matters that arise in the medical and educational setting (e.g., tort claims under the Texas Tort Claims Act; education law; disciplinary actions; conflicts of interest; state and federal constitutional law; commercial law; interpretation and application of laws, policies and regulations; and other general matters); identifies issues appropriately handled by Legal Affairs and refers other issues to the correct departments within the University.
- Serves on or advises institutional committees in areas such as conflicts of interest, research, policy, data security, compliance, and safety.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
