JOB SUMMARY
Serves as an expert working on high-complexity histology techniques.

This is a senior histology role for the Tissue Management Shared Resource.  It requires someone with considerable histology experience to perform complex histology tasks, including immunohistochemistry optimization assays, sectioning and staining for digital spatial profiling projects and construction of tissue microarrays. 

Specific duties will include:

• Supervise junior histologist 
• Manage all histology, IHC, RNAScope and DSP requests for the core 
• Run all IHC, RNAScope and DSP projects 
• Construct tissue microarrays 
• Communicate with researchers in regard to relevant requests 
• Assist with microtome sectioning for complex projects and as needed based on workload for the core.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required

• Education
  Associate’s Degree in a science and/or completion of histology training program or equivalent training as defined by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

• Experience
  5 years histology experience

• Licenses and Certifications
  (HT) HISTOLOGIC TECHNICIAN required for clinical setting or
  (HTL) HISTOTECHNOLOGIST through ASCP required for clinical setting

JOB DUTIES

• Job knowledge. Independently perform work of considerable complexities to achieve general results by using ingenuity, initiative and good judgment, and/or precedents to work problems having broader implications. Keep abreast of new technical developments. Assist with implementation of new tests, equipment, programs and/or procedures in the assigned area(s) as needed. Participates in research and development, review of current literature, and revision of laboratory operation and methodology. Prepares special histology preparations including constructing tissue microarrays and sectioning tissue onto special slides for advanced techniques such as laser capture microdissection or spatial transcriptomics. Performs specialized histology, immunohistochemical, and in situ hybridization procedures. Assists in assay development, optimization, and validation using immunohistochemical multiplexed (IHC/IF) techniques. Accountable for on-going training and professional development of staff. Performs duties of histotechnologist as necessitated by absence or peak workload.
• Quality Orientation. Anticipate and identify issues related to results of analysis and be able to troubleshoot through lab testing issues. Collaborates with researcher to determine if further testing should be performed per project requirements. Provides instruction to faculty and research personnel for properly processing both human and mouse/rat tissues and expert guidance on how to improve laboratory operations for optimal research results.
• Instrumentation. Responsible as a primary source of information for maintaining current instrumentation. Maintains laboratory inventories and quality control; constructs, assembles, and operates laboratory equipment; troubleshoots equipment as necessary.
• Productivity; Able to work, process and analyze methods utilized in the laboratory and ensures goal and expectations are achieved by the department.
• Performs special projects such as evaluation of new reagents, procedures, tests, or other duties as assigned.
• Orientates and instructs students and laboratory personnel in established clinical laboratory techniques, as required. Provides working supervision for small group of histology technicians, students, and/or other supportive laboratory personnel of lower grade.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
