JOB SUMMARY
UT Southwestern Medical Center is pleased to announce we have several Coding Specialist II positions available. Candidates will code Gastro and/or Cardiology cases. Works under general supervision to perform intermediate coding activities in a manner that meets productivity and quality standards as established by the coding leadership within the Revenue Cycle – Front End Department. The key objective will include but is not limited to the following: 

• Charge release/evaluation 
• Resolve coding and billing edits
• Coding/billing various procedures for Cardio cases
• Coding/billing various procedures for Gastroenterology cases
• Adept with excellent communication skills, written or verbally
• Comfortable collaborating with physicians regarding charges 

Shift: Flex shift, 8-hour shifts (flex schedule but must begin between 0500-0900)

Work From Home (WFH): This is a WFH position. Candidates must live within Texas, DFW area preferred. Additional details to be discussed during the interview.

  EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  Required

• Education
  High School Diploma or GED 
   

• Experience
  3 years of professional coding experience 
  A coding certification or billing/coding diploma may be substituted for 1 year of experience. 

Preferred

• Experience
  Proficiency in EPIC. 
  Epic electronic health record systems and 3M coding software. 
  Knowledge of Correct Coding Initiatives (CCI). 
   

• Licenses and Certifications
  (CPC) CERT PROFESSIONAL CODER or
  (CMC) CERT MEDICAL CODER or
  (RHIT) REGD HEALTH INFO TECHNOLO or
  (CCA) Cert Coding Associate 

JOB DUTIES

• Performs accurate and timely review of intermediate coding and abstracting of UTSW accounts utilizing, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS and CPT code sets as indicated and according to department procedures.
• Performs basic to intermediate coding activities in a manner that meets productivity and quality standards as established by the coding leadership.
• Ability to review and resolve front-end charge review coding edits.
• Maintains current understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, coding guidelines, and teaching physician documentation guidelines, and grows knowledge through participation in continuing education programs.
• May lead, train and/or mentor the work of lower level designated coding employees to ensure quality of work and growth in knowledge and expertise.
• Assists in upholding coding team expectations of effective communications, including customer service standards, professionalism, operating procedures, processes, and other team strategies and goals.
• Assists in promoting a culture of support, continuous learning, and team work.
• Adheres to all UTSW and departmental policies and procedures to include the Remote Coding Agreement where applicable.
• May support multiple specialties in a hybrid role as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
