JOB SUMMARY
Works under general supervision to provide routine technical assistance in performance of assignments requiring basic knowledge of fundamental techniques and practices related to particular field of science. 

This position is well-suited for a recent graduate (bachelor’s degree) who wants to gain more research experience before pursuing graduate studies. Experienced candidates are also welcome to apply.

In these exciting, early years of the group, we are looking for people who are up to the challenge to help build our research group from the ground up.

Expectations:

• Be self-motivated and excited about biochemistry.
• Active participant in lab meetings, including presenting their own data.
• Assist senior lab mates with experiments and/or experimental analysis for most of each workday.
• Perform independent and guided reading into relevant topics for the project.
• Keep a detailed lab notebook and communicate experimental plans/issues.
• The ideal candidate would be a member of the lab for at least 2 years.

Preferred Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, biophysics, biology, or a related discipline in a laboratory environment.
• Interested in basic or curiosity-driven biological science research, particularly using biochemical approaches.
• Willing to learn and grow as a scientist.
• Willing to interact with all levels of staff and contribute positively to the lab environment.

Lab Job Duties

• Assist in reagent preparation and experiments, including DNA molecular biology (e.g. PCR, cloning, and large-scale DNA purifications).
• Carry out transfection-based experiments with HEK cell culture systems using methods such as co-immunoprecipitation, western blotting, as well as fluorescent and chemiluminescent methods.
• Carry out protein purifications and in vitro assays using purified reagents.
• Keep inventory of lab reagents and order scientific lab supplies.
• Maintain bacterial, insect, and mammalian cell cultures.
• Record resulting data in accordance with established methods.
• Confer with supervisor concerning results obtained and modify procedures in accordance with instruction of supervisor.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Required

• Education
  Completion of two (2) years of college or specialized training in histology, medical technology or relevant field or 
  High School Diploma including courses in basic sciences such as physics, chemistry, biology, etc. or GED Equivalent 
   

• Experience
  1 year of experience as Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent with Completion of two (2) years of college or 
  3 years of laboratory experience including two years as Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent with High School diploma or GED equivalent 
   

JOB DUTIES

• Assists in conducting experiments and working on research problems in such fields as physiology, bacteriology, tissue culture, chemistry, and other related fields by performing basic, routine, and least complex procedures as prescribed by supervisor.
• Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.
• Records resulting data in accordance with established methods. Confers with supervisor concerning results obtained, and modifies procedures in accordance with instruction of supervisor.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
