JOB SUMMARY
This position works under the general supervision of the Director of Patient Flow Center and provides operational and clinical leadership to the Patient Flow Team. The Manager is responsible for hospital-wide bed utilization, surge communication, capacity planning, and the execution of strategies to minimize boarding, improve throughput, and optimize timely discharges across all admission portals.

JOB DUTIES
- Serves as primary manager of hospital bed utilization, providing overall direction, guidance, and coordination to patient flow team. Uses bed board technology, rounding and notifications communication to proactively initiate actions to mitigate patient holds, boarding issues and maintain an understanding of house-wide bed supply and demand
- Effectively utilizes overflow spaces to minimize patients holding in ED.
- Works with admission portals (Emergency Department, External Transfer, OR/Procedure Areas, Direct Admissions) and inpatient floors to plan for daily scheduled and unscheduled bed demand
- Communicates consistently to directors, managers and assistant managers of bed capacity and barriers to patient placement
- Facilitates rounding units to determine tentative, pending, and actual discharges, identifying, and removing barriers to transfers and admissions.
- Attends daily Throughput and Safety Huddle and provides an update of bed status, OBS bed needs, scheduled direct admissions, and transfers, plus current bed availability and discharges need to reach potential goal
- Partners with care givers to “pull” patients from the admission portals to the inpatient floors and reduce wait times for patient beds. Works with the hospital and physician leaders to prioritize admissions and place patients directly into the most appropriate and available location.
- Makes timely decisions regarding patient placement and escalates to physicians and hospital leadership as needed. Maintains continuous communication with the Bed Assignment team. Works with the Administrative Supervisor team, Transport and EVS to ensure the bed board is consistently updated and escalates room turnover issues as required.
- Leads decompression plans during capacity.
- Continuously prioritizes bed requests both internal, direct admit, and external transfers taking into consideration patient acuity, urgency, and population.
- Partner with Staffing office to coordinate staffing resources and needs. Leverages clinical decision making in working with bed assignments, physician leadership and admitting team to provide a seamless admission process
- Exhibits “Patient First” Behavior to patients, visitors, physicians, and staff
- Responsible for identifying improvement opportunities for patient flow
- Works with Patient Flow Liaisons to ensure barriers are identified, escalated, and all documentation is completed.
- Provides operational management of daily services to ensure customer satisfaction is a high priority.
- Assists in the management of financial, capital, and human resources. Leads/participates in departmental performance improvement activities and integration of services.
- Assists in the development of standards of practice and personnel performance. Ensures services meet established quality standards.
- Designs, executes, and delivers effective system of internal controls and is in compliance with laws, regulations, and internal policies and procedures. Ensure compliance established and maintained based on department and hospital policies and procedures.
- Facilitates teamwork and staff development and staff satisfaction through planned group processes.
- Oversees unit leadership to ensure compliance with nursing staff and/or other non-licensed medical or office support personnel. Responsible for recommending hiring, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions in coordination with the Clinic Manager. Ensures that new employees are oriented and trained appropriately.
- Actively works with leadership as the liaison for implementation and monitoring of established documentation standards in the medical record.
