THE OPPORTUNITY
The University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) Medical School seeks an experienced and innovative individual to serve as Assistant Dean for Admissions. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring excellence in all aspects of the UTSW’s medical student admissions process for our MD, MD/PhD, and MD/MPH programs. The Assistant Dean is a member of the medical education leadership team and has broad programmatic oversight for its Admissions. The Medical School has a strong institutional commitment to excellence, innovation, and professionalism and seeks an individual who shares that commitment.
The candidate must have an MD degree (or equivalent) and have a significant record of leadership and achievement in an area of medicine and/or education. Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal communication and collaboration skills to effectively serve as part of the medical education leadership team. Prior administrative experience in a medical education and admissions committee setting is highly desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to expend up to 50% effort as the Assistant Dean for Admissions and up to 50% effort related to clinical and/or scholarly effort.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT & LEADERSHIP
Ensures excellence in all aspects of the UTSW medical student admissions process experience.
Implements and supports admissions strategy set by the Dean/Senior Associate Dean.
Works closely with Senior Associate Dean to develop admissions policies and procedures that ensure compliance with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation standards, Texas Medical & Dental School Application Service (TMDSAS), and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
Work closely with the Director of Office of Admissions and Recruitment on all matters related to the recruitment process.
Lead recruitment initiatives including interview presentations, campus visits, and collaborate in the planning of second look weekend events.
Coordinate with the Office of Medical Education and Office of Student Affairs to direct admissions data analysis initiatives and continuous quality improvement (CQI) efforts. Utilize data driven approaches to drive and align admissions processes with the goals and objectives of the institution.
Collaborate with the Deans for the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the School of Public Health to ensure consistency in admissions for dual degree programs.
Represent the UTSW and Office of Admissions at local and national / recruitment medical education meetings.
Attendance at local, regional, and national advisory conferences/meeting related to medical student admissions (e.g., TMDSAS match)
Works closely with the Joint Admissions Medical Program (JAMP) on successful pipeline programs at UTSW.
LCME Compliance:
Maintain thorough understanding of LCME accreditation standards applicable to the admissions program. Direct efforts to document and describe institutional processes for medical student selection, assignment, and admissions.
Holistic Review Process:
Lead the implementation and ongoing refinement of a holistic review process that evaluates applicants based on a broad range of attributes, experiences, and metrics beyond academic performance.
Along with the Chair of the Admissions Committee and the Admissions director, train admissions committee members and staff on holistic review practices emphasizing the importance of values consistent with the missions of UTSW SOM.
Analyze and utilize outcomes data to continually assess and improve the effectiveness of the holistic review process.
PROGRAMMATIC OVERSIGHT
Lead and provide oversight for the Office of Admissions and supervise the Director of Admissions.
Collaborate with the Chair of the Admissions Committee to develop and implement appropriate policies and procedures for the identification, evaluation, and recruitment.
Support the admissions offices’ efforts to ensure the efficient processing of applications, including the use of technology to streamline admissions workflows.
Engage in committee service as required by the role.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will have a M.D. (or equivalent) with a strong record of leadership in medical education, and involvement in teaching and/or mentoring activities. Candidates must be excellent communicators, highly collaborative, motivated, and have significant experience building, leading, and unifying interdisciplinary teams. The Candidate must have past experience with admissions selection processes at a Medical School.
The appropriate series and appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on the University of Texas pay scales.
